Is Marriage For the Rich?

Posted by Diva on August 2nd, 2009

Back in 2007 I wrote a post called I can’t afford to get married.

A recent comment brought it back on my radar so I had to go back and read what I wrote. Now that the economy has changed I wanted to see if my opinion on the issue has changed as well.

In general, it hasn’t. I don’t know how it works in other countries but I am speaking about the US.  I know there are special circumstances for everything and costs range depending on where you are but that doesn’t change my opinion that the majority of people who say that mean they can’t afford a wedding, not that they can’t afford to get married.

Here’s a list of marriage license laws so you can see how much a license costs in your state. Some of the states have info on how much a license + JOP ceremony costs as well.

In my opinion i think you shouldn’t get married untill you can afford to have a nice wedding. I don’t think you should celebrate something so big unless you can spend big on it!

If you can think ‘outside’ the box, I’m sure you can have a wedding, without breaking the bank. Nowadays, couples are getting pretty creative in their wedding day plans. I’ve seen fabulous backyard and even beachside weddings, that were very affordable. Keep searching the internet for budget weddings, you’re bound to come up with great ideas! good luck =)

It just depends on how big and fancy of a wedding you want. To me huge expensive weddings are a waste of money. Why spend so much money on something you don’t get to keep? Spend the money ON your wife on things she’ll have for a long time. All an expensive wedding turns into is really expensive photos.

Big fancy weddings don’t have to be expensive. I have a good friend who is getting married next month and they rented a small hall for the reception and worked a deal for the catering. For photos, they purchased cheap disposable cameras and left one on each table so everyone can take pics and give a different perspective of the wedding in photos. You just have to be somewhat creative and cut corners where you can.
