When Did a Big Wedding Become a Must Have?

Posted by Diva on April 3rd, 2009

I was reading the Homesteading Today forum (don’t ask why!) and I came across a topic that asked when did a big wedding become the “thing”.

The responses were interesting, but this one really tickled me.

Probably about the same time that a young person right out of school could move into a brand new, 4,000 square foot home with all the amenities with no money down and financed on an ARM with zero interest for the first 2 years. Then furnish the entire place with fancy, high quality furniture and household goods with “No Payments For 2 Years”.

This is about the same time that the above said person could buy a $45,000 SUV on a 96 month loan to park in their driveway.

Fancy, exotic vacations, fine dining, and everything you would want to buy financed on thousands and thousands dollars on credit cards.

All of the above achievements, most often available without income verification, job history, ability to repay, or credit worthiness.

Ouch!

But I think it’s a good question.

Do a lot of brides want big, lavish weddings because they truly want them; or do they want them because of TV shows, movies, and magazines perpetuate this “ITS YOUR DAY” idea?

I don’t know the answer but I am going to spend some time thinking about it.
