Should I Read or Memorize My Vows?

Posted by Diva on September 5th, 2007

Now that the day is growing closer I’ve found myself wondering what to do about vows.

I wrote the vows for both of us and I had it set in my mind that we’d simply read them once the time came. “Isn’t that odd? Are you going to have a big piece of paper sticking up” is what some people said. My response was “I don’t think it’s any more odd then simply repeating after a minister. After all, I’d rather hear all the vows as if they are coming from him, and not as if he’s just repeating.”

I was confident in that choice. But this was months ago and neither of us has even glanced over the vows. Now I’m starting to think that memorizing wouldn’t be such a bad idea. But then what if we get nervous and forget? Doesn’t it make sense to have a copy there with us.

But heck, with me turning into such a anti-traditional wedding queen; I might just say forget the vows! We’ll just wing it and say whatever comes to mind.

Memorize them but have the paper there in case you get nervous.

I know my husband just winged it, which was a little weird…but, hey, it’s his style. I had mine on a crumpled up piece of paper that my MOH held onto. And when my turn to vow it up came, I couldn’t read some of my writing. I laughed, and everyone laughed with me. Because they had to.
