What Should I Do With My Wedding Dress?

Posted by Diva on August 27th, 2007

I am having buyers remorse….2 months after the fact, but the effect is still the same. Why did I spend so much on a wedding dress? What am I going to do with it after everything is over?

The killer part is that I won’t even get to wear it all day. I’ll be in it 4 hours tops and then it will be done. People on the web are always buzzing about trash the dress. While the pictures are lovely I could never do that.

Then there’s the option of saving it for my future daughter or grand daughter. I am nostalgic like that but I have a feeling my kid’s won’t be.

I could preserve it in a pretty box…but that doesn’t make me feel like I am getting my money’s worth.

Or I could cut it up and make something pretty like a pillow case, but I don’t have it in my heart to take scissors to all that goodness.

I guess the most logical thing to do is to wear the thing again. So my mission is to find an occasion (or make one up) so that I can wear my wedding dress more than once.

You can donate your dress to a non profit that cleans it up, reslls it, and gives all profits to breast cancer research. You get a write off and GREAT KARMA. I used them a couple years ago, makingmemories.org

Thanks for the suggestion. Breast cancer research has a special place in my heart.

You can turn your gown in to a formal dress that can be worn again. I plan to make turn my dress in to a corset top an A-line skirt…and save some of the extra fabric. Hope this helps…and love your site!

One of these days I’m going to have a girly tea party and everyone is going to have to wear an old bridesmaids or wedding dress that has been collecting dust in their closet. I think that will be fantastic. :) But donating the dress is a great idea, a lot of place require you have the dress cleaned first though - just FYI. There is also the option of selling the dress, maybe on ebay. Try to recoup a little of your expenses, you know?

Love the tea party idea!

[...] I started looking for dresses at non-wedding places like JCPenney, Target, and Jessica McClintock. Yes, Target sells wedding dresses. All I needed was a white dress, right? Besides, what are you supposed to do with a wedding dress after the wedding? [...]

I like the idea of donating! I was not that smart and just lost it when we were moving out from our old house.I completely agree that expensive wedding dress is a waste.
