I Can’t Afford To Get Married

Posted by Diva on July 27th, 2007

I think people confuse getting married with having a wedding.

Sad women cry, “We love each other so much but we can’t afford to get married! We want to though. ”

Think again sister because what you can’t afford is a wedding, but I am quite sure that you could afford to get married.

Now I am not one of those people that says “if you really wanted to get married you’d haul your butt to J.O.P.”, but my response is similar. However, I understand that because of how we are conditioned, some of the “pretty stuff” does matter…a dress you like, photos to cherish, having people you are close sharing in the occasion… but you can have all of that without breaking that bank if you changed your point of view to thinking about how to build a marriage instead of how to have a lavish wedding.

I’ll end this post before I start ranting on the clever marketing ploys that are used to ….*stops*… but before I go, here’s some great suggestions on how to have a small wedding a.k.a. elopements.

I see you point maybe for the majority of people, but i want to get married - we knew we couldnt afford much so we decided to go together just us, no dress, no flowers, nothing, its going to cost us just over £400 (thats not including any rings!) - Which i cant afford, I can’t afford to get married!Marriage is just for the rich (or richer than us!)Sad but true x

i guess its a lot cheaper to get a marriage license in the US

Not for everybody. We have 2 children, a baby on the way and my fiance has lost his job. He is in the Army National Guard, but they don’t pay much. So between diapers and bills, we can’t afford to get married. And I’m not talking about flowers and music, I’m talking about me him and our children in front of the JOP during their office hours at their office. Heck, we can’t even afford the marriage license. We were hoping to get married before he gets deployed to Iraq, but I’m not sure that’s going to happen.

I think these days when people say “We can’t afford to get married” maybe they really mean it. My boyfriend and I can’t afford to BE married. If we got married my student loan payments would triple, not good. So when someone says they can’t get married you need to ask why, not assume it’s just the wedding part.
